Scope of Work for Veterinary Professional - City of Memphis Animal Shelter
Position Title: Veterinary Professional (Shelter Medicine Specialist)
Location: City of Memphis Animal Shelter

1. Objective
To provide comprehensive veterinary care to animals in the City of Memphis Animal Shelter, ensuring their health and well-being, while supporting shelter operations, staff training, and community outreach.
2. Key Responsibilities
Animal Health Management
- Perform routine health assessments, vaccinations, and treatments for shelter animals.
- Oversee and implement protocols for disease prevention and control, including vaccination schedules and quarantine procedures.
- Conduct spay/neuter surgeries and other surgical procedures as necessary.
Shelter Operations Support
- Collaborate with shelter staff to manage the intake of animals, ensuring proper health evaluations and documentation.
- Assist in the development and implementation of shelter policies regarding animal care and welfare.
- Provide guidance on shelter design and animal housing to improve animal welfare and operational efficiency.
Staff Training and Development
- Train shelter staff and volunteers in basic veterinary care, animal handling, and emergency response procedures.
- Develop educational materials and workshops for staff to enhance their knowledge of shelter medicine practices.
Community Engagement
- Work with local community organizations to promote responsible pet ownership and animal welfare initiatives.
- Participate in community outreach programs, including vaccination clinics and adoption events.
Record Keeping and Reporting
- Maintain accurate medical records for all shelter animals, ensuring compliance with local and state regulations.
- Prepare reports on shelter animal health statistics and trends for management review.
3. Qualifications
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited institution.
- Licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Tennessee.
CoM Public
- Experience in shelter medicine or a similar environment; familiarity with high-volume spay/neuter programs is preferred.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team.
4. Deliverables
- Monthly reports summarizing veterinary services provided, animal health outcomes, and recommendations for improvements.
- Training sessions conducted for shelter staff, with feedback collected to assess effectiveness.
- Active participation in community outreach activities, with documented engagement metrics.
5. Performance Metrics
- Health outcomes of shelter animals (e.g., adoption rates, return rates).
- Staff training assessments and feedback.
- Community engagement success as measured by participation in events and feedback from attendees.
6. Compensation
